Tales of Skytopia
Heaven is an oft-discussed but ultimately completely unknown place located high above Skytopia. Scholars and priests agree that it is the place where God and the Angels dwell, and most people believe it is where the souls of good people go after death. Besides this, nothing is known about Heaven.
Many an ambitious explorer has tried to fly a sky-ship higher and higher, in order to perhaps reach Heaven. However, such a fools’ errand is doomed to failure. As the vessel flies higher, the magic in its metals begins to dissipate, re-absorbed into the natural magical field that emanates from Heaven. This field can’t be seen, but it can be felt, and as the vessel presses upwards, it grows heavier and heavier. Eventually, it will be drained of magic, and fall. Humans who fly beyond this point using their own personal magic eventually die if they press on too far; their souls, being made of magic, are drawn out of their fleshy husks, and their material remains crash down to the Earth. Some religious sects believe dying in this fashion transforms one into an Angel or allows instant entry to Heaven – but given the difficulty of flying that high, one would need to be both extremely rich and extremely pious to attempt such a spectacular form of suicide.
