Hades

Hades, Sheol, the Underworld, the Below, the Under-Earth; this fearsome place has many names. All the names, however, refer to the same thing: The network of dark tunnels and yawning caves that run deep below the Earth. It is said that Azrael, the Angel of Death, casts the souls of the wicked underneath the Earth, and perhaps Hades is where they end up.

Hades is a place where magic is almost dead. It possesses an alien, mystic force of its own, though, and horrid creatures with bizarre abilities dwell in the darkness underneath the Earth, sometimes emerging to terrorize the people on its surface. Some believe that all monsters who plague the Earth-dwellers hail from the Underworld, and people shudder at the thought that perhaps these creatures were once human souls. Azrael’s judgement is certainly without mercy if this theory holds true.

Few sane people would willingly descend into the Underworld, but there are a few reasons one might do so. Some magical metals like night-iron are abundant here, and Hades is also the source of the black, slimy liquid known as Hellblood, which is an ingredient in many alchemical concoctions. Furthermore, the earth is rich with gems and non-magical metals, some of which can be used to synthesize magical metals. Most people, though, deem Hades far too dangerous to be worth the risk.
