Tales of Skytopia
Angels’ Reach is one of the largest cities on the Earth, at least as far as Skytopians are concerned. It has sprung up as a means of gathering crumbs from the rich man’s table, and lies at the foot of Heaven’s Gate, just by the large staircase that connects the Earth to Skytopia. A large palisade wall protects the city, which is mostly built of logs and hewn stone, and it smells awful due to the lack of magitech sanitation. Still, for an Earth-dweller Angels’ Reach offers comfortable living: Monks and priests from Heavens’ Gate come down the mountain every week to provide magical help, ranging from healing magic to advice on architecture or legal disputes, and in return the people of Angels’ Reach send gifts of food and needlework up the mountain, providing the monks with food and clothing.
Angel’s Reach has no King or noble of any sort. Strangely, it is in fact the only democracy Skytopia knows of, with voting rights for any man or woman above the age of thirty. They are heavily influenced by the philosophies and teachings of the priests on Heavens’ Gate, and believe that no Earth-dweller should claim complete authority over his fellow man – only God and the Angels can hold such power. Thus, the city is ruled by those deemed old enough to have learned wisdom, who elect a mayor among themselves every seven years. The current mayor is a woman in her forties named Lin. Sadly, despite the noble efforts of democracy, the city is teeming with corruption.
